Notorious Taipei noodle shop employee caught wringing dirty rag into soup pot

Jul 03, 2023Jul 03, 2023

A video showing an employee at a famous beef noodle shop in Taipei, Taiwan squeezing dirty rag into a soup pot has sparked outrage online. The longer video potentially contradicts the owner's insistence that they did not use the water in preparing dishes for customers.

According to the report, a delivery driver who witnessed the incident on June 4 while picking up an order at lunchtime, recorded the video. After widespread criticism of the video, the owner claimed the employee was about to change the soup pot. The owner also criticised the delivery driver for damaging the restaurant's reputation.

As the 13-second video does not show what happened afterward, there was confusion between the two parties’ statements. People were eagerly anticipating the release of the full video to see the truth for themselves. On June 5, at around 11pm, the delivery driver updated the post with four more videos, with a total length of 12 minutes. These new clips show the employee serving soup to customers after squeezing dirty rag into the pot. They also claim that the pot remained in use until they left the restaurant.

Numerous online users who had previously been regular patrons of the establishment expressed their anger, with comments such as, "No wonder I had a stomachache after ordering delivery the other day," and "The Taipei City Health Department should order them to close." Furious users also left negative reviews for the restaurant and renamed it "XX Beef Noodle."

In response to the situation, the Taipei City Health Department stated they would send personnel to investigate. If the restaurant has violated regulations, it must address the problem within a certain timeframe. Currently, the eatery remains closed, and the owner has acknowledged that the employee did not disclose the entire truth.
