Ram 1500 REV Is the Name of the Brand's First Electric Pickup

May 18, 2023May 18, 2023

The company has confirmed the electric version of its half-ton truck will be called the Ram 1500 REV.

Ram has significantly shortened the official name of its first electric pickup, which is slated to start production next year. While the concept version was originally called the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV, the brand has condensed it down to the Ram 1500 REV.

Other than what we already know about the concept, today's news is only notable because of the name. Thankfully, the world won't have to wait too long to learn more details, as Ram says it plans to release more information this Sunday, February 12. Could it be a surprise addition to the slew of Super Bowl commercials? Stay tuned.

"REV" is most likely short for "revolution"; however, it also sounds like the term used to describe the revolution of an internal-combustion motor. Perhaps it's a double entendre that pays tribute to both traditional gas-powered Ram trucks from the past and to the future that's potentially full of electron-fueled pickups.

It's still likely a few months before the Ram 1500 REV is officially revealed to the world. Its presence at this year's Chicago auto show gave us an opportunity to see the concept version up close. Not only is it more immense in person than in photos, but its open-air interior—with its sort-of third-row seats—offers a tantalizing look at potential design and tech features for the production version.

Sure, the concept's entirely glass roof, coach doors, and nonexistent B-pillar are probably pure fantasy, but we expect the real electric Ram to have more than a few innovative features. Now we just have to wait and see what what they'll be.

Eric Stafford's automobile addiction began before he could walk, and it has fueled his passion to write news, reviews, and more for Car and Driver since 2016. His aspiration growing up was to become a millionaire with a Jay Leno–like car collection. Apparently, getting rich is harder than social-media influencers make it seem, so he avoided financial success entirely to become an automotive journalist and drive new cars for a living. After earning a journalism degree at Central Michigan University and working at a daily newspaper, the years of basically burning money on failed project cars and lemon-flavored jalopies finally paid off when Car and Driver hired him. His garage currently includes a 2010 Acura RDX, a manual '97 Chevy Camaro Z/28, and a '90 Honda CRX Si.
